The Arnold Peters Legacy Scholarship
The Arnold Peters Legacy Scholarship Fund provides one scholarship of at least $1000 per year to at least one student from a Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) member community enrolling in their first year of a recognized accounting or financial management program at a post-secondary institution in British Columbia.
By mandate of our membership, the Arnold Peters Legacy Scholarship Fund is administered by the board of the Nesika Heritage and Cultural Society (NESIKA), the charitable arm of the UBCIC.
About the scholarship
Arnold Peters, UBCIC’s Finance Manager, is the organization’s longest serving employee, having worked for UBCIC for 43 years. Arnold suffered a severe and debilitating stroke at the end of June 2022 at his home in Tk'emlúps (Kamloops), and has since been transferred from hospital and is now living with support in Hope, where he is in close proximity to his home community of Chawathil and near his immediate and extended family overseeing his care and rehabilitation.
Arnold believes deeply in mentoring and supporting the next generation of First Nations community leaders; his commitment to future generations mirrors UBCIC’s own commitment to building capacity across our communities, ensuring BC First Nations have the opportunities and resources necessary to thrive, step into leadership roles and pursue their goals. To honour and recognize Arnold’s commitments and his long standing service to UBCIC, maintaining us in good financial standing over four decades, seeing us through years of hardship and struggle, managing the complexities of variable fiscal and staffing arrangements, mentoring assistants, and always approaching his position with calm, kindness, and excellent humour, UBCIC has established the Arnold Peters Legacy Scholarship Fund.
